EF Language Garners Three Awards for Leg 5 Performance
EF Language crew celebrates winning third Volvo Trophy.

SÃO SEBASTIÃO, Brazil (March 13, 1998) Whitbread Round the World Race leader EF Language, skippered by Paul Cayard, captured three awards for its winning performance during the 6,670-nautical-mile Leg 5 from Auckland, New Zealand, to São Sebastião, Brazil.
The awards are:
- Volvo Trophy
- Best 24-Hour Run During Leg Five - 447.6 nm
- Roaring Forties Trophy
The Volvo Trophy is presented to the winner of each of the nine legs of the Whitbread Race. This was EF Language's third, having previously won Legs 1 and 3.
EF Language's 24-hour run of 447.6 nm was just shy of the world record held by Silk Cut.
The Roaring Forties Trophy was awarded to the boat collecting the most points between Cape Town, South Africa, and São Sebastião, which covered Legs 2 through 5. EF Language won Legs 3 and 5, finished fifth in Leg 2, and was fourth in Leg 4.
Leg 6 São Sebastião to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida begins Saturday.
