Kostecki Gets High Marks for Whitbread Contribution
SYDNEY, Australia (Jan. 4, 1998) AmericaOne tactician John Kostecki has received high marks for his contributions aboard Chessie Racing during Leg 3 of the Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy.
George Collins, skipper of Chessie Racing, praised Kostecki during an interview by Carol Pogash of Quokka Sports, host of the official Whitbread Web site.
The U.S. boat placed third in a very close finish in Leg 3 after finishing fifth and sixth in legs 1 and 2.
Collins gives much of the credit to his team's improved showing to
tactician Kostecki and to his good relationship with the team's "first
rate" navigator, Juan Vila. The two, Collins said, "converse on a
steady basis.
"I made it very clear to the crew that John is running the boat in terms
of where we're going and what we're doing and what sails are up. He
makes sure we go from one watch to another watch and makes sure
we're sticking to our plan."
Kostecki is expected to sail with the team for four more legs. Due to
"other commitments," Collins said he won't sail Leg 5. But he might be
available for Legs 6 7 8 9. "I'll take him whenever I can get him," said
Collins.
