Video Viewing

Internet video comes in two basic varieties:

  • Streaming — you can watch it live over the internet. Image quality is degraded, but there's no wait. VDOLive is what we are currently using to do this. Modem speeds below 28.8 kbps may not provide satisfactory performance, however.
  • Download and Play — you download the file to your desktop and then play it back. Our most recent clips were created using Sorenson QT3 (included when you download Quicktime ver. 3) which plays back nearly in real time. We used Quicktime Cinepak and Quicktime ClearVideo for our initial clips. They require considerably longer to download. ClearVideo has a higher compression ratio than Cinepack, which means the file size is smaller and the download time is less.

To view the video clips, you will need a video player plug-in, which are free from the respective developers. Click on the icons at left to obtain the player of choice. To use Quicktime ClearVideo, you will need to install the Quicktime player first, then the ClearVideo plug-in.
