Jim Nicholas
Grinder
Jim Nicholas, 46, from San Diego, CA, is the starboard grinder. He brings 37 years of sailing experience to the position, including five America's Cup campaigns, starting in 12-Meters in Newport, RI, in 1983.
After the last 12-Meter series in Newport, in the Freedom and Liberty campaign, Nicholas sailed in Fremantle, Western Australia in America II in 1987, and in the IACC boats Stars and Stripes in 1992 and 1995. Nicholas has sailed with Paul Cayard in the past in everything from Star Boats to maxis. He also campaigned for the 1980 Olympics in Solings, and has raced Etchells.
Known as "Jim Slade", or "JimmyNic", Nicholas is a real estate developer. He graduated from UCSD with a Bachelors Degree in Economics. He is married to Linda and they have three children, Lexi, Brooke, and William.
