John Kuhn
Technology Director
John Kuhn, a Naval Architect at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in San Diego, is the technology director for the AmericaOne challenge. He has 11 years of experience in naval architecture, and is a specialist in hydrodynamics and hull design. He has participated in America's Cup yacht design programs since 1985.During the 1995 America's Cup campaign Mr. Kuhn was the Design Team Manager for the PACT 95/Young America defense team. During the 1992 America's Cup campaign, Kuhn worked for both Team Dennis Conner and the Partnership for America's Cup Technology (PACT) organization, studying and analyzing the rough-water performance of racing yachts. For the 1987 Cup, Kuhn carried out towing tank studies for several American challengers at the Arctec Offshore Corporation, where he worked from 1985 through 1989.
Kuhn received a B.S. degree in Naval Architecture in 1983, and an M.S. degree in Naval Architecture in 1985, both from the University of Michigan. His studies focused on hull design and hydrodynamics. From 1985 through 1989, he carried out a variety of studies in experimental hydrodynamics at the Arctec Offshore Corporation. From 1989 to the present, he has worked at SAIC, where he applies theoretical and computational techniques to the design and analysis of various types of water-borne vehicles.
