Tom Ehman

Rules Advisor

America's Cup veteran Tom Ehman joined AmericaOne in October, 1999, bringing two decades of America's Cup experience. Ehman advises the team, especially Paul Cayard and John Kostecki, on rules, protests, and strategy.

This is Ehman's seventh Cup campaign. In 1980 he served as Rules Advisor to the Defenders. In '83, Ehman was the Rules Advisor to New York Yacht Club when they battled the Aussies' winged-keel; then in 1987 was Executive Director of the New York's America II Challenge. When San Diego won, Ehman was hired as managing of the organizing committee that ran the successful 1988 and 1992 defenses. In '95 he was rules advisor for Team Dennis Conner with Paul Cayard at the helm.

A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ehman (45) is a lifelong racing sailor. He has won a handful of collegiate and dinghy national titles, but is better known for leadership roles in US Sailing and the International Sailing Federation over the past 25 years, and for the development of on-the-water umpiring. An international judge and umpire, he served on the Olympic jury in 1992 and 1996.

Ehman and his wife Leslie and daughter Meg live in Hamburg, Germany, where he is a managing partner of a sports marketing company with clients primarily in Formula One (motorsport).
