Roger "Clouds" Badham
Meteorologist
Roger Badham — known
as "Clouds" in the yachting world — is always looking skyward for a clue
or sign that may give a competitive edge to a racing sailor.
He has provided weather forecasts to America's Cup competitors since 1983, and is one of the most respected meteorologist in the business. He will assist AmericaOne on two fronts by providing:
- Weather-related data to the Design Team so the boat will be optimally configured for the conditions expected in Auckland, New Zealand, and
- Weather forecasts to the AmericaOne afterguard when the
sailing begins.
In addition to the America's Cup, Clouds has been involved in the last three Whitbread Round the World Races, all four BOC races, as well as all major international ocean races, including the Admiral's Cup, Kenwood Cup, Sydney-Hobart, Transpac, Bermuda,
Capetown-to-Rio, Melbourne-to-Osaka and the Global Challenge. He has been the
Australian Olympic Yachting Team meteorologist since 1988.
He operates the Marine Weather Services business in Australia, offering specialized weather forecasting, routing advice and research to the marine industry and, in particular, sailboat racing. He has 25 years experience as a meteorologist and 15 years as a marine specialist. He first became involved in sailboat racing in 1977, providing Iain Murray with weather advice during his 18-foot skiff years.
America's Cup Participation
Personal
Honors degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in Meteorology. Received a Churchill Fellow to study in the United Kingdom during 1981, an Anzac Fellow to study in New Zealand during 1985, and is presently a Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
As a youth, he sailed a 14-foot VJ skiff in the Sydney area, but admits he's
a much better swimmer than a sailor. He now lives in 30 acres of rain forest
overlooking the ocean, one hour south of Sydney, with his wife, Margaret.
They have three "grown-up" children.
