Billy Bates
Mast / Sewer
Billy Bates, 35, was born in Sydney, Australia and has already taken part in three America's Cup campaigns for his native country, sailing as crew in two of them. Now a resident of the United States, living in San Diego, CA he is the mast and sewer man for AmericaOne and coordinates the fitness program for the team.
A background in wooden boat building and an extensive sailing background led Bates into Australia's Kookaburra '87, and Spirit '92, Cup campaigns. Then he owned and operated his own fitness business in Sydney before he became mast and sewer man for oneAustralia in 1995. He also ran that syndicate's complete fitness program.
When he's not sailing, Bates enjoys restoring vintage pick-ups, rugby and kayaking. He is married to JoAnn and they live in San Diego.
