1998 Mumm 36 Worlds ------ red rule ------
Kostecki, New Yorker Win Big to Take the Lead

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (March 5, 1998) — The German boat New Yorker, with AmericaOne tactician John Kostecki calling the tactics, won all three races today to move into the lead in the highly competitive Mumm 36 World Championship.

Sailing in breezes of 10-18 knots, New Yorker grabbed the lead early in all three races and stayed there.

Kostecki attributed the stellar performance "good boat speed and good crew work."

New Yorker (3, 4, 2, 1, 4, 3, 1, 1, 1) has 20 points, followed by the Italian boat Moby Lines (1, 1, 7, 2, 1, 1, 5, 7, 2), seven points back, and the American boat Radical Departure (2, 3, 4, 5, 2, 2, 4, 6, 5), which has 33 points.

The competitors will sail the distance race tomorrow, starting at 0900. The course will take them up and down the Florida coastline, and the results will count for 1.5 points for scoring.
