Kostecki Wins Again, Faces Brady in Semis
LANGKAWI, Malaysia (Dec. 5, 1997) AmericaOne tactician John Kostecki went undefeated again today to win the fourth and final elimination round of the Malaysia Challenge 1997 International Sailing Grand Prix.
This put him atop the leader board with 15 points and the right to choose his opponent in the best-of-five semi-final round tomorrow. He selected Gavin Brady, a New Zealand native sailing under the Hong Kong flag. (Click on the photo to view a larger image.)
In the second semi-final pairing, the two top-ranked match racers in the world, Peter Gilmour, skipper of Team Nippon, and American Ed Baird, will face off. The winners of the two semi-final matches will meet in the championship round on Sunday.
The unranked Kostecki continued his dominance of this all-star group of skippers, defeating Jochem Schumann of Germany, as well as Gilmour and Baird, today. This gave the San Francisco native a stunning three victories in the four elimination rounds. His only loss during the three days of racing was to Baird in the second round.
Here's a comment from the regatta press officer:
Kostecki still remains elusive as to what his secret is and how an
unseeded skipper is consistently getting the better of the others from the top of the field. "Good team work," was all he volunteered.
Final Standings, elimination series:
1. John Kostecki, USA 15 pts.
2. Ed Baird, USA 13 pts.
3. Gavin Brady, Hong Kong 4 pts.
4. Peter Gilmour, Japan 4 pts.
