Titan, Kostecki Finish Second in Highly Competitive Regatta
FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida (Nov. 23, 1997) The Puerto Rico-based Titan, with AmericaOne tactician John Kostecki in the afterguard, finished second in the Corel 45 World Championship, a regatta in which eight of the nine competitors each won at least one race.
Atalanti X (2-8-1-5-2-4-6-1-2-5-2), owned by George Andreadis of Athens, Greece, took top honors, with the Russell Coutts-skippered Indulgence (7-3-5-3-1-5-8-3-3-2-8) finishing third.
Titan (4-7-3-1-3-3-4-8-5-4-4), owned by Tom Hill, Sr., had a share of the lead mid-way through the regatta, but an eighth-place in the eighth race of the 11-race series (no throw-outs) scuttled a shot at the trophy.
Rain squalls, confused seas, and winds that blew into the
low 20-knot range tested helmsmen, tacticians and crews alike.
The regatta, hosted by Lauderdale Yacht Club, drew boats from England, France, Greece, Puerto Rico, Sweden, the United States, and Wales.
