Report From AmericaOne's Olympic Trials Camp in St. Petersburg, Florida

With AmericaOne training and testing in San Pedro now complete, the team has scattered briefly to their homes or other sailing venues. Some members are already in New Zealand. Crew members Morgan Larson and Kevin Hall will be late arrivals. They are in St Petersburg, FL, training for the U.S. Olympic Trials for the 49er Class which run October 16-24.

Update, September 30, 1999

AmericaOne sailing team member Kevin Hall and I have been on the run since leaving the training base in San Pedro, California in late August. While focusing our efforts on winning the America's Cup we have also been pursuing our childhood dreams of winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics. We headed-off to race our 49er in Sweden and have now returned to St. Petersburg, Florida, to train for the Olympic Trials in two weeks time.

Our daily routine has consisted of an early wake-up, quick breakfast and heading off to the sailing center by 8:00 AM. With our Swiss training partners and our coach, Zack Leonard, we are on the water by 9:00 AM. Our sailing has been mainly focused on speed testing as our Swiss friends are the fastest light air team in the world and they are helping us to get fast in the light conditions we expect in Florida.

The wind usually quits by 1:00 PM and we are back to shore to measure mast bends and talk about the sailing. From there we go to the gym since we are trying to keep fit for both the 49er and the America's Cup boat. This is a tough place to log long hours on the water due to light winds and the burning sun but spending time now should pay off when we start racing on October 16.

We know what is happening back in Auckland and our thoughts are with the team as they ready the boats and the compound for what will be an important last few weeks as the build-up to Round Robin I begins. Go get em!

We will report back as things heat up for us in Florida and then we will look forward to joining the rest of the AmericaOne team on October 28th.
