1998 ISAF/SPERRY TOP-SIDER WORLD SAILOR OF THE YEAR NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

Cayard and Crew of EF Education, Language Nominated


The World Sailor of the Year Awards will be presented for the fifth year during the ISAF Annual Conference, November 1998. The Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of male and female sailors, regardless of discipline of the sport over the past year. Both the crews of EF Language and EF Education were nominated, including Paul Cayard, currently the Skipper and CEO of AmericaOne, as well as Curtis Blewit and Josh Belsky.

Dennis Garro, President of Stride Rite International Corp noted, "After five years, we are proud of the worldwide recognition that the ISAF/Sperry Top-Sider World Sailor of the Year Awards have received. Both ISAF and Sperry share a long history of supporting sailing, and we congratulate all the 1998 candidates on their nomination." The nominees for the World Sailor of the Year Awards 1998 are:

Male Nominees

Crew of EF Language (Multi-National)

In recognition of the success of Paul Cayard (USA), Skipper, and the crew of EF Language in winning the 1997/98 Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy. The unquestionable skill of EF Language's crew was demonstrated by their four 1st places in the nine-leg race.

Ben Ainslie (GBR)

In recognition of his ongoing successes in the Laser Class during the year, including winning the titles, 1998 Laser World Champion and 1998 Laser European Champion. As of 2 February 1998, Ben claimed pole position on the ISAF World Sailing Rankings for Olympic Classes in the Laser Class.

Michel Desjoyeaux (FRA)

Winner of the 1998 Le Figaro Solitaire, the single-handed race, sailed in 30-foot one-design yachts. This testing 1,500 mile race, comprising of four legs, is fought over the Bay of Gascogne, the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL)

Previously a nominee in 1996, his 1998 nomination is in recognition of his consistent successes in the Finn Class, including placing in the top three of many of the ISAF graded events during 1998, and winning the 1998 Finn Gold Cup (World Championships).

Female Nominees

Elizabeth (Betsy) Alison (USA)

Nominated in recognition of her many successes on the match racing circuit, including winning the women's match racing event at the 1998 Dubai ISAF World Sailing Championship. Over the past year Betsy has risen twenty-six places to 20th in the ISAF Official Match Race Rankings (open), and also

Carolijn Brouwer (NED)

In recognition of her success in the Europe Class Dinghy, which includes winning the 1998 Europe World Championships. Her consistent results over the past year have placed here in the top three places at all the ISAF graded events in which she has participated, with one exception. From 30 June 1998 Carolijn claimed pole position on the Official ISAF Rankings for Olympic Classes in the Europe Class.

Crew of EF Education (Multi-National)

In recognition of the only women's entry in, and successful completion of, the Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy. EF Education, skippered by Christine Guillou (FRA), is only the third all-female yacht to compete in and complete this gruelling 31,600 mile race.

Crew of Royal Sun Alliance (Multi-National)

In recognition of the endeavour by the all-female crew to claim the Round-the-World non-stop record for the Jules Verne Trophy in March 1998. In October 1997, they successfully smashed the Cross Channel Record from Cowes (GBR) - St Malo (FRA).

The recipients of the Awards are determined by popular vote, received from the world of sailing.

Voting will be completed by 16 October 1998 and the winners will be announced on Tuesday 3 November 1998 at the ISAF Annual Dinner and World Sailor of the Year Awards Presentation in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

To be hosted by leading sailing personalities, the evening will be a celebration of sailing and sailors. The winners will receive their Awards from His Majesty King Harald of Norway and His Majesty King Constantine.
