Farr 40 World Championship 1999 - San Francisco

With AmericaOne training and testing in San Pedro now complete, the team has scattered briefly to their homes, other sailing venues, and some members are already in New Zealand. In San Francisco, John Kostecki and Morgan Trubovich from AmericaOne are sailing aboard John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti at the Farr 40 World Championships.Terry Hutchinson is racing with Helmut Jahn on Flash Gordon

Farr 40 Worlds - Terry Hutchinson reports from Flash Gordon in San Francisco - Daily Update, September 13, 1999

Things are getting tight at the top! Jim Richardson on Barking Mad is tied with Vincenzo Onorato aboard Moby Lines after both boats dug out of tight spots yesterday. John Kilroy with John Kostecki and Morgan Trubovich aboard Samba Pa Ti, while not out of it, have their work cut out for them as they trail the two boats by eight points. Day four should be a good one to watch!

Aboard Flash Gordon things have been sporadic. This is the first time for owner Helmut Jahn competing at the top level of the Farr 40 class and while the learning curve is steep, our results are not what we expect. Our pace is better in the moderate breeze as this is more typical to conditions that Flash experiences in Chicago. Our highlight of the regatta thus far came yesterday. Helmut nailed the start at the favored end with pace. Flash was locked in and we were able to get to the weather mark second. From there we battled with Barking Mad, Peregrine, and Raging Bull for the top three spots. While we ended up fifth in the seven-lap race it was a huge improvement over our previous performance in the breeze.

Today, the last day, should be more of the same. Light air race in the morning, great breeze in the afternoon. St. Francis, as usual, is doing a great job with race management and hospitality. Should be a great place to race the America's Cup. That is all for now!

Results (all races count) - After seven races:

1. Barking Mad, Jim Richardson (USA), 1-2-8-1-1-9-3, 25 points
2. Mascalzone Latino, Vincenzo Onorato (ITA), 5-6-1-2-3-2-6, 25
3. Samba Pa Ti, John Kilroy (USA), 3-1-2-6-5-15-1, 33
4. Flyer, Doug Mongeon (USA), 4-7-6-11-11-1-2, 42
5. Southern Star, John Calvert-Jones (AUS), 7-5-3-8-2-8-10, 43
