Labor Day weekend the Farr 40 fleet used the NOOD regatta on San Francisco Bay as the practice for the Farr 40 Worlds. Fifteen boats competed in the NOOD with close, tight racing, their sights set on the World Championships. Samba Pa Ti came out on top after seven races with the owner John Kilroy on the helm, AmericaOne's John Kostecki as tactician, and Morgan Trubovich as headsail trimmer.
Today was the first of four days of racing for the Farr 40 World Championship on San Francisco Bay. Nine races are schedule to be sailed, all on the Berkeley Circle, with a windward/leeward format. With St. Francis Yacht Club as the host, the first race started promptly at 11:30am with a fleet of 20 boats. Barking Mad, last year's World Champion got off to a nice start and played the left side of the race track to easily win race #1 of the day. Samba Pa Ti struggled on the first upwind leg but eventually moved through the fleet and finished 3rd.
The second race we saw the breeze building and everyone changing the mast tune and sails for the different conditions. Both Samba Pa Ti and Barking Mad started at the pin end and got off to a great start. Samba Pa Ti took the left side of the course to round the top mark two lengths in front of Barking Mad. Samba Pa Ti then stretched her lead throughout the race as Barking Mad struggled with some of the other top boats in the race. Samba Pa Ti won the race with Barking Mad finishing second. Barking Mad holds the lead going into Sunday's three-race day. Monday and Tuesday there are two races scheduled each day. Most the fleet will stay in San Francisco and sail the Big Boat Series September 16-19.
Day One Results of the Farr 40 World Championship:
1. Barking Mad, 1-2, 3 points
2. Samba Pa Ti, 3-1, 4
3. Blue Chip, 6-4, 10
4. Flyer, 4-7, 11
