Steinlager Line 7 Cup: AmericaOne Prepares For Showdown In Auckland

Contenders from five current America's Cup teams, plus three other past Cup skippers are racing in Auckland, NZ, this week in the Steinlager Line 7 Cup match racing series. The ten-boat fleet comprises the strongest field of Cup players yet to be seen in the city where the Cup will be defended in a few short months. Paul Cayard reports on the latest sailing action from the Auckland waterfront:

Sailing News: March 23, 1999

AmericaOne is now back in Auckland for the Steinlager Line 7 Cup match race regatta. The racing starts tomorrow on the harbor in front of downtown.

Ten teams are entered in the event. America's Cup contenders include AmericaOne, PACT 2000, AmericaTrue, Prada, and Team New Zealand, plus Gavin Brady #2 in the world rankings, Chris Law #3 in the world rankings, Magnus Holmberg, Chris Dickson, and Dean Salthouse. The regatta format is a double round robin followed by semi-finals and finals. The racing starts on Wednesday and finishes on Sunday.

Today was a practice day so we spent four hours on the track getting warmed up. The wind was across the current today so that made for interesting calls on laylines. That is not an uncommon phenomenon here so we could likely end up racing in those conditions.

Sailing on the AmericaOne team is: Skipper Paul Cayard, Tactician John Kostecki, Mainsheet trimmer Sean Clarkson, Genoa Trimmer Morgan Turbovich and Bowman Curtis Blewett. Our big hurdle today was making the weigh-in. We were at the gym bright and early as usual but had to go for an extra sauna afterwards to lose a few extra pounds of water. The average weight per crew member is 87.5 kgs and we have four crew who weigh more than that and Morgan who weighs less.

The field is strong and we are looking forward to some tough races. We will bring it to you each day right here.
