1998 Newport-Manhattan Series ------ red rule ------
Kostecki and 1D48 illbruck-PINTA Continue to Lead Newport-Manhattan Series

NEWPORT, Rhode Island (May 30, 1998) — The new One Design 48 illbruck-PINTA, skippered by AmericaOne tactician John Kostecki, continues to lead on points in the Newport Manhattan Series of the the 1D48 Class — part of Newport's annual Nantucket Gold Regatta.

A third and a fourth place today left illbruck-PINTA two points ahead of Abracadabra, skippered by John Kolius, which recorded a first and a second. illbruck-PINTA had started the day with a seven-point lead over Abracadabra, as a result of her three first places in racing yesterday.

The Nantucket Gold fleet raced today in the ocean off Point Judith in ideal conditions with bright sunshine, steady breezes and a light chop on the water. The morning race was completed in a brisk westerly breeze that at t|mes hit 16 knots. The afternoon race was sailed in a puffy 8 to 14-knot sea breeze from the south west.

A missed wind shift in the first race today and an early start in the second left the newcomer to the 1D48 ranks fighting to get back into contention. "Today we really began to appreciate the three victories we logged yesterday," said skipper and tactician John Kostecki. "Although the results don't show it, we continue to learn how to sail the boat and we are continuing to improve. It was tight racing out there today."

In the opening race today, illbruck-PINTA executed a perfect start at the pin end of the line and headed out to sea on the left hand side of the course, but a wind shift had favored the right.

As fortunes changed in the close racing on the ocean course, illbruck-PINTA was fourth at the first windward mark, but picked up a place and was third, behind Sagamore at the second leeward mark. She was closing on Sagamore as they crossed the finish.

In the second race illbruck-PINTA and America True were both across the line before the gun and were recalled to restart. Windquest, sailed by AmericaOne crew member Kimo Worthington took a commanding lead which she held throughout the race, while illbruck-PINTA came from behind to work back into fourth place. She was less than two seconds behind third place boat Starlight.
