AmericaOne Staff Mix it Up at Key West Race Week

Key West, FL, January 21, 1999-- Key West Race Week has become one of the world's most hotly contested grand prix fleet racing events. This year's weeklong event boasts record attendence with over 275 boats competing.

Bay Area sailor Chris Perkins recently joined the staff of AmericaOne to head up the AmericaOne financial department. An avid competitor, Chris competed at the 1999 Key West Race Week on board Jim Kilroy's Farr 40 Samba and sent back this colorful report on Thursday's racing. Samba finished third after Friday's racing in this competitive class:

Today looked liked it was going to be a rough day for us as we got squeezed out at the start of the first race and then had to tack three or four times before the wind instruments ever got calibrated. Needless to say we found ourselves deep in the food groups by the end of the first beat. But then ...... the sailing gods smiled on us for our good looks and clean living and the wind backed twenty degrees putting us in second at the first mark. We fended off unwarranted attacks for the rest of the race finishing second.

Race two started similarly, but this time we hit the rig tune perfectly and were able to speed our way back up to the front of the pack arriving at the first mark in second. The first lap was fairly uneventful but that changed at the last leeward gate. I'm still not sure what really happened but we managed to waive through four boats in a matter of a few minutes. Very frustrating. The good news however is that all of the boats that were ahead of us yesterday did worse than we did for the day. By our count we are still in third but only three points back from the lead.

Hope all is well in SF.

Chris Perkins, AmericaOne
