AMERICAONE Team Members Win 3 of 4 Races in Bermuda
Strong Showing on Day One of the Bermuda Gold Cup Qualification Series
October 18, 1998, Hamilton, BERMUDA -- Team AmericaOne is competing in Bermuda this week in the Gold Cup, one of the Top Match Racing events on the World Circuit for Match Racing. The format for the series is 16 sailors from around the world, divided into two groups, who compete in a round robin series. The top four of each group qualify to continue, and those eight will meet eight seeded sailors on Wednesday. The eight seeded sailors are some of the highest ranked sailors in match racing in the world.
This is the first match race regatta for Team AmericaOne in about 18 months. Most of the team was busy winning the Whitbread Round the World Race, so now it is time to get back up to speed in Match Racing.
On Sunday, Paul Cayard and his crew of John Kostecki, Josh Belsky and Curtis Blewett won 3 races and lost 1 to end the day in second place in their group. The top points getter in their group was Kiwi Murray Jones who was undefeated today. Tomorrow, Monday, Team AmericaOne races 3 more times to conclude the round. In the other group, Francesco de Angelis of the Italian America's Cup team won all three races to lead that group.
Racing on the Hamilton Harbor was shifty as the northerly wind came over the town onto the sound. Cayard and team won the first two races leading all the way, trailed in the third race until the second windward mark and then passed into the lead. In the last race against Jones, Cayard misjudged the timing to the start, starting early and having to go back and restart. Still, Team AmericaOne managed to reel the Kiwis in to finish just 1 boat-length behind.
Check in with us on late Monday, Oct. 19 for final results of the qualification series.
