$60,000 Purse to be awarded at 50th Gold Cup
October 15, 1998, Hamilton, BERMUDA -- Paul Cayard, Skipper and CEO of AmericaOne will be competing against the world's best at the 50th anniversary of the Bermuda Gold Cup match race event, beginning on Sunday, October 18, 1998. The Gold Cup is the world's oldest match racing regatta in one design boats and will offer $60,000 in cash prizes to the winning team.
Cayard's team will include John Kostecki, AmericaOne Tactician and Josh Belsky, AmericaOne Team member and member of the Whitbread winning EF Language crew.
In addition to Cayard and crew, other teams include a who's who of the America's Cup 2000, including Peter Gilmour (Nippon America's Cup Challenge), Chris Law (Great Britain), Peter Holmberg (Team Caribbean), Russell Coutts (Team New Zealand), John Cutler (New Zealand, America True), Francesco de Angelis (Italy's Prada Challenge) and James Spithill (Australia).
Also competing will be Paula Lewin of Bermuda, ranked number 1 in the women's rankings and number 19 on the combined world rankings. Besides Coutts, two other sailors from Team New Zealand will be heading teams in the Gold Cup: Dean Barker and Murray Jones.
Bermuda is known for its dark rum, pastel houses and excellent one-design racing.
Round Robin racing begins this Sunday, October 17 in International One Design ("IOD") yachts, the boat used in all but five of the previous Gold Cups. The Qualifying Series is expected to end Monday evening or Tuesday morning, leading into the Bermuda Commercial Bank Challenge. With $5,000 on the line, this series of races provides the seeded skippers an opportunity to be involved in competition before the Championship Rounds begin on Wednesday.
