AMERICAONE WINS THE SEMI-FINALS WITH AN 8-2 RECORD

For Immediate Release

Prada and Stars & Stripes Fight for Remaining Spot

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, January 13, 2000 - AmericaOne, the San Francisco-based St. Francis Yacht Club's America's Cup 2000 challenger, lost its second match of the series against Stars & Stripes (USA 55) by 22s in big seas and 15-18 knot winds. USA 55’s win leaves the last challenger position to be determined tomorrow in the delayed single-pair match of Stars & Stripes vs. America True. The remaining challenger position for the Louis Vuitton will either go to Prada Challenge or Stars & Stripes. Yesterday AmericaOne secured its spot in the Louis Vuitton Finals when it claimed its eighth win.

A very aggressive prestart had both boats starting on starboard, USA 55 resting on USA 61’s windward hip until the wind shifted. Stars & Stripes picked the two significant upwind windshifts of the beat and ended up with a significant lead by the top mark. As the winds diminished, Paul Cayard and the AmericaOne Team closed within a boatlength on the second run, threatening to take the lead from Stars & Stripes. On the final upwind leg, USA 55 again put some distance on USA 61. The race concluded in a close gybing duel, with AmericaOne closing to less than a boatlength. Stars & Stripes defended their lead to take the win.

“I think they (Stars & Stripes) did a good job at leveraging their lead,” commented AmericaOne Skipper Paul Cayard. “Their backs were up against the wall a couple of times and they managed to make the right tactical decisions leaving no passing lanes.”
