San Francisco’s Fourth Consecutive Win Over Japan

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, January 7, 2000 - AmericaOne, the San Francisco-based St. Francis Yacht Club's America's Cup 2000 challenger, won its third match of the series against Nippon Challenge (JPN 44) by 23s. After racing was cancelled yesterday due to insufficient wind, the two teams met today in ideal weather conditions setting the stage for a close showdown. Today was AmericaOne’s fourth consecutive win over Nippon Challenge.

Race 4 of the Louis Vuitton Cup Semi-Finals began in flat seas with winds ranging from 10-12 knots. Paul Cayard, at the helm of AmericaOne’s USA 61, crossed the starting line at full speed. As both boats exchanged tacks up the first windward leg, USA 61 continuously edged out JPN 44. The pair remained close up the second windward leg when USA 61 benefited from a windshift. By the 2nd leeward mark, USA 61 had gained a three boatlength lead and continued to protect its position throughout the remainder of the race.

“I’m pleased with our boat speed and crew work. Nippon sailed well and was always there to capitalize if we made any mistakes,” commented AmericaOne Tactician John Kostecki. “It was great to have a heated competitive match.”
