ABANDONMENT GIVES KOSTECKI AND CAYARD SECOND PLACE FINISH

Cold Gray Weather Fails to Dampen America One Spirits

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, SEPTEMBER 27 - Causing some disappointment in the One Design 48 ("1D48") fleet, Race Seven of the St. Francis Yacht Club's Big Boat Series was abandoned at 13:30 PST. The abandonment means that America One Tactician John Kostecki and Skipper Paul Cayard aboard, the One Design 48 ("1D48") illbruck-PINTA finished with a second place overall to John Risley's Numbers in the best of seven series.

Dark gray skies and cold rain caused uncharacteristically light winds for the series. Racing was postponed at 11:00 PST, and at 13:00 p.m., the Race Committee hopefully gave a dock start. However, the fleet's efforts to look for breeze were in vain, and with a strong current, the Race Committee had no choice but to abandon the final race of the series.

"We were looking forward to sailing the last race and beating the Kiwis, but we still met our objective of pulling together as a team. We were definitely improving and closing the gap," commented Kostecki.

As for the unusual weather, Kostecki noted, "I've sailed in a lot of 'Big Boat' regattas, and this weather is actually not that unusual." Kostecki and Cayard are looking forward to racing together again in the Bermuda Gold Cup match racing series October 17-25, 1998.
