Light, Shifty Winds Predominate in Race 5

PINTA Holds onto 3rd

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, SEPTEMBER 26 - After extreme winds for during the early morning hours, light winds predominated Race 5 at the St. Francis Yacht Club big boat. Teams prepared for heavy air racing, only to have the winds die as the marine layer unexpectedly burned off.

Starting near Treasure Island in the east part of San Francisco Bay, the boats sailed north of Alcatraz seeking favorable current. Starlight, Windquest and illbruck-PINTA lead the One-Design 48 fleet as the reached toward the Yellow Bluff mark near the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Reaching towards Blackaller then downwind, the three boats pulled away from the remainder in a tight bunch.

As the three leaders headed back upwind towards Yellow Bluff, Starlight continued to play the shifty air and strong currents favorably. illbruck-PINTA out of nowhere pulled to leeward of Windquest and into second place.

Separation increased amongst Starlight, illbruck-PINTA and Windquest. On the last leg, as the tide changed and the yachts sailed up the Cityfront, PINTA fought off Windquest to stay in second place for the race and third overall for the regatta.

San Francisco racing fans are now lining the shores of the Cityfront as Race Six begins. The skies have darkened and the breeze picked up as marine layer returns over the Bay. Stay tuned for a final report after racing this evening.
