Hawa|an Group Names Skipper

HONOLULU, Hawaii (Sept. 30, 1996) — Waikiki Yacht Club and Aloha Racing have named America’s Cup veteran John Kolius as the skipper for the proposed Hawa|-based challenge.

A world-champion sailor, Kolius sailed Courageous in the 1983 defender trials in Newport, R.I., and was skipper of New York YC's America | challenge in Australia in 1986-87. During the 1992 and 1995 Cup campaigns, he was a sailing coach for Italy’s Il Moro di Venezia challenge and the America³ Foundation defense team, repectively.

Waikiki YC is not an official challenger, however. In June, the club announced its intent to challenge, but no formal challenge has been issued to date. The club missed the original deadline of May 14, but has until May 14, 1997, to submit a late entry. The late submission will be penalized, however. The club must pay double the $100,000 entry fee.

Syndicate spokeswoman Daisy Jean Cathcart said the team will challenge, but that at this point there's nothing to be gained by filing prior to May 14.

Meanwhile, the Hawa|an effort is using its seed money to tie up the best talent possible, she explained. With Kolius on board, the team will focus on obtaining a designer.
