Paul Cayard and the Team of EF Language Can't Stop Winning

Final Victory in the Round Gotland Race for 97/98 Winning Whitbread Team

GOTHENBERG, Sweden (July 2, 1998) — The overall winner in the Microsoft Gotland Runt Race is EF Language, skippered by AmericaOne CEO Paul Cayard and winner of the 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race. EF Language crossed the finish line at 8:40 a.m., beating the second-place boat and most serious Whitbread Race rival, Swedish Match, by 58 minutes.

Competing in the open division were four other Whitbread 60s, a Grand Mistral, an America's Cup boat, the old Rothmans' Round the World boat and a few other craft. The course spanned 550 nautical miles and took one day longer than was initially expected due to unusually light winds. Much like Leg 1 of the Whitbread, food rations ran short.

In Cayard's first report on June 30th, he explains, "Our main competitor is Swedish Match, who is seeking a little bit of consolation after our Whitbread win, and so far they are getting it." But within a matter of hours, he reported that EF Language had passed Swedish Match and was anticipated to gain a greater lead due to their faster boat speed downwind. Ever the wordsmith, Cayard concluded his report by saying, "It is still a long way back to Sandhamn and we have hungry ball players right behind us."

In the end, EF Language sailed a good race and took a first-place victory in this final competition. EF Language completed the race 68 hours, 40 minutes, 5 seconds.

Eight of the 12 Whitbread crew members competed in the race, including Navigator Mark Rudiger.

Final Results:

  1. EF Language, W60
  2. Swedish Match, W60
  3. Nicorette, GM80
  4. EF Education, W60
