AmericaOne Sailing Team
Takes on World's Best

LONG BEACH, California (March 7, 1997) — Beginning next Tuesday, the AmericaOne sailing team will compete against some the world's best match racers for the prestigious Congressional Cup.

Skipper Paul Cayard and tactician John Kostecki will be joined by America's Cup and match-racing veterans Steve Erickson, Hartwell Jordon, T.A. McCann and Josh Belski.

They will face stiff competition from the likes of defending champion Gavin Brady of New Zealand; past winner Dave Perry of Marblehead, Mass.; Peter Holmberg, skipper of the Virgin Islands America's Cup challenge and currently ranked No. 10 in the world; Markus Wieser of Germany, ranked No. 14; Neville Wittey of Australia, ranked No. 19; and Yachtsman of the Year Dave Ullman of Newport Beach, Calif.

Also competing are Scott Dickson (brother of Chris Dickson); Olympian Jeff Madrigali; and Rich Matzinger, who qualified for this event by winning the Ficker Cup. All three are representing the U.S.

Hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club, the regatta will be sailed in identical Catalina 37 sloops that were designed and built specifically for match racing.

Events such as these are crucial for developing the core of the AmericaOne sailing team, Kostecki said. It gives him and Cayard a chance to see how well various people work together. "We hope to have these guys on board for the long haul," Kostecki added.

The team will practice on Sunday and Monday, then begin the first round-robin on Tuesday. The racing will continue through Saturday, with Cayard, Kostecki and crew looking for another victory, as they had at the Steinlager Line 7 regatta last fall.

"We're all winners," Kostecki said. "We'll be disappointed if we don't win."

Check back next week for race results and first-hand reports from John Kostecki.
