AmericaOne Tactician John Kostecki Captures Line Honors in Newport-Bermuda Race on Maxi Yacht Alexia

AmericaOne Team on Threshold of First Place

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — JUNE 24, 1998 — AmericaOne Tactician John Kostecki took line honors in the prestigious Newport-Bermuda Race. Sailing as tactician on Alexia (ex Windquest), the Riechel-Pugh ILC Maxi in the Newport-Bermuda Race, Kostecki finished in 90h-47m-24s. Owner Alberto Roemmers attributed the victory to excellent crew work and good tactics. The race started in Newport, Rhode Island on Friday, June 19th and concluded on Wednesday, June 24th.

Being called the "United Nations" entry, Alexia is registered in Great Britain, Alberto Roemmers is from Argentina, the captain is from Canada, and the crew is a mix of people from Argentina, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, South Africa and the United States. Kostecki, ever the competitive sailor/tactician discussed his strategy on June 23, "By keeping Alexia to the east of the rhumb line, but west of the other Maxis, we were able to pick up a better breeze before crossing the Gulf Stream. With that boost we were able to open up a substantial lead on the others."
