CAYARD COMMENTARY: Kenwood Cup Race Wrap-up

HONOLULU, HI — AUGUST 10, 1998 — Paul Cayard, Skipper of AmericaOne and guest tactician aboard illbruck-PINTA called in the following commentary on the week of racing:

"A first and a second made the last two races of the 1998 Kenwood Cup an excellent finish for the crew of Pinta Illbruck. Pinta only completed 6 of the 8 races of the series and still managed to finish second overall with scores of 1,1,1,2,2,5. In Sunday's first race, Pinta finished second to Abracadabra by 3 feet.

Close racing characterized this One Design 48 fleet with several of the finishes seeing the entire 6 boat fleet with 30 seconds.

For John and I, it was a good week working together in preparation for the 2000 America's Cup. Peter Gilmore and his Nippon Challenge won the regatta just 6 points ahead of Pinta, while Kolius with his Aloha Challenge was third. Jeff Madrigali's America True was fourth, until losing a protest to Kolius in Race 7, moving Windquest with Doug DeVoss at the helm and Kimo Worthinton of the New York Yacht Club's Challenge calling the shots into 5th. John Bertrand helming Starlight for the Eklund family wound up last after have a tough week with a breakdown in the Molikai Race.

John and I will race together again on Pinta in the San Francisco Big Boat Series at the end of September. There the fleet of six will be joined by Sagamore and Leading Edge, the other two OD48's, to round out the fleet to eight boats.

For me, it is back to San Francisco and work on the AmericaOne Challenge."
