PINTA Makes Strong Showing with Second Place Overall Finish
HONOLULU, HI AUGUST 9, 1998 Aboard the 1D48 illbruck-PINTA, AmericaOne Tactician, John Kostecki, and Skipper, Paul Cayard, sailed as team mates for the 1998 Kenwood Cup sharing tactician and helmsman duties on the German One Design 48 illbruck-PINTA which won the final day of racing for the 1D48 Class Sunday, with a first and a second place. Her two-one victory confirmed her second place overall in the eight-race class series. The class winner was the Japanese 1D48 G-SHOCK Nippon Challenge. Racing for other classes finishes with the 376-mile Kahu-Wili Race that starts on Tuesday.
John Kostecki from San Diego, CA, is also the skipper and tactician of illbruck-PINTA which is campaigned by the illbruck Round the World Challenge team preparing for the Volvo Ocean Challenge 2001-2. The team owner is the illbruck Group, based in Leverkusen, Germany. Paul Cayard from San Francisco, CA, was the guest helmsman for Kostecki this week and will also steer illbruck-PINTA during the St. Francis Yacht Club's Big Boat Series next month on San Francisco Bay.
Racing off Honolulu on Sunday started on uncharacteristically flat water and a 5-7 knot breeze from the north east. illbruck-PINTA started well while her rival G-SHOCK, steered by Peter Gilmour from the Nippon Ocean Racing Club's challenge for the America's Cup, was over the line early. Jay Ecklund's "Starlight", sailed by John Bertrand from Annapolis, MD, led on the first beat and covered llbruck-PINTA closely, resisting her attempts to break through.
The 1D48 Abracadabra, sailed by America's Cup challenger John Kolius out of the Waikiki Yacht Club, led at the windward mark while illbruck-PINTA was fourth. Kostecki started gaining ground on the second weather leg and then worked his way up to narrowly lead the fleet as they ran under spinnakers for the finish. illbruck-PINTA and Abracadabra converged on the finish line on opposite gybes, with the local boat taking the gun by less than two feet. It was the only victory all week for Abracadabra. illbruck-PINTA was second.
In the second race, Kostecki won the start and led around the course as the wind built to over 24 knots and seas rose to three to four feet. G-SHOCK was one of three boats to make a premature start but recovered to finish second.
"A great week," said Kostecki, in summary. "I can't help thinking about what the result might have been if the rudder hadn't broken on the first day, but that's yacht racing."
Kostecki complimented Gilmour, a newcomer to the class, for his overall victory. "These were tricky conditions and the racing was tight," he said. "It was nice to get out and beat the Japanese boat twice in a row, even if we couldn't overtake them for the overall first place."
