Light Breezes from Tropical Storm Estelle Plague Fleet
HONOLULU, HI AUGUST 9, 1998
While Tropical Storm Frank builds over Mexico, the remains of Tropical Storm Estelle plagues a different kind of havoc with the Kenwood Cup racers. Conditions at 8:00 a.m., HST remain dead calm, with flat seas and very light breeze visible out on the race course.
illbruck-PINTA faces a difficult challenge, and needs both of today's scheduled races to make up for the deficit created due to Monday's rudder failure.
All things considered, the spirits of the illbruck-PINTA team remain high. This international group of sailors, including John Kostecki as skipper and Paul Cayard as tactician, have worked tremendously hard to overcome Monday's events. Keith Taylor of the 1D48 office noted that the team is "very intense but low key and relaxed, if that contradiction can be made. There's an air about this crew of extreme competency and concentration." Taylor remarked, "On Monday, when the rudder fell off while the team was in second place, the boat was back in the marina at 2:00 p.m. The team swarmed over the boat, the 1D48 class had spares ready, and by 3:45 p.m., an entire new rudder was in place and illbruck-PINTA was back in the water ready to race."
Taylor reported similar intensity for the 148-mile Molokai race, "PINTA had a slow start and had to work their way through the entire fleet, beating into very rough seas all night long. By the time they made the short reach into the turning mark, they had passed each team but G-Shock. The entire 70-mile run to the finish, PINTA was never more than 5 boat lengths behind the leader, pulling alongside on several occasions. However, G-Shock maintained the advantaged inside position, and with numerous helicopters and photographers in tow, PINTA fought hard."
The 1D48 class is racing a "short program," finishing racing today in order to prepare and ship the yachts to San Francisco for the Big Boat series in mid-September. Cayard and Kostecki are expected to return with the illbruck-PINTA team, satisfied with boat speed and their team and hungry for more first place finishes.
