"The Tactician's In Charge" - As Seen In August's Sailing World

HONOLULU, HI — AUGUST, 1998 — Paul Cayard, Skipper of AmericaOne and guest tactician aboard illbruck-PINTA with PINTA skipper and AmericaOne tactician John Kostecki commented on Saturday's efforts to catch regatta leader, G-Shock:

"On Saturday, racing was cut short by the passage of a low pressure system to the north of Hawa|. In the first and only race of the day, three boats in the one design 48 class, Pinta, G-Shock, and Abracadabra were over the starting line early. All three managed to catch up to the other three by the second windward mark with Starlight having a 5 boat length advantage on the pack. down the last run to the finish, America True managed to pass G-Shock for the only real position change.

For us on Pinta it was obviously a disappointing day as we needed to put some boats between us and G-Shock in order to have a chance at winning the regatta. Now winning is almost mathematically impossible but strengthened our grip on second place by gaining one point on Abracadabra.

Hopefully the strong trades will return for tomorrow."

*Race 7 Abandoned. Scoring includes on-course penalty points for race 1: G-Shock accepted a 20% penalty for violating rule 29.1 and Starlight accepted a 50% penalty for violating rule 29.1. PINTA withdrew from races 1 and 2 due to a broken rudder and America True withdrew from Race 2 also apparently due to equipment failure.
