illbruck-PINTA Finishes 2nd in Grueling Molokai Race
HONOLULU, HI AUGUST 7, 1998 AmericaOne Skipper Paul Cayard and Tactician John Kostecki are team mates on illbruck-PINTA sharing tactician and helmsman duties throughout the 9-race Kenwood Cup. On Thursday, in a dramatic and close race, illbruck-PINTA finished a heart-breaking second place only fifteen seconds behind series leader G-Shock.
Cayard had the following comments on the challenging 148-mile race:
"The Molikai Race started at 18:00 HDT on August 4, 1 mile south west of the Diamond Head Bouy. Pinta did not have a great start and had to scramble a bit in the first 10 minutes of the race. It was a rough beat out to Molikai in 25-30 knots of wind with 6 foot seas.On Friday the fleet rests. Racing resumes on Saturday with two in shore races and the same on Sunday. Check back to the AmericaOne Skipper website for the latest daily updates.G-shock and Starlight were neck in neck for the lead as the One Design 48 fleet tacked around the western cape of Molikai with Pinta, America True and Abracadabra in a tight fight 300 meters behind. Pinta got herself into third soon there after and then half way up Molikai just before Kalapapa, Starlight broke here running backstay attachment and was forced to retire.
Pinta was able to close on G-Shock at the turning mark at Maui, to trail by one minute at the half way point for the race. We rounded at Maui at 04:00 Thursday with the all the crews on the rail all night on all boats. The run back to Honolulu was a full on workout, pumping the main and grinding the spinaker sheets for 7 hours in the early morning heat. Pinta pulled along side G-Shock several times but never was able to pass. It was an incredibly hard fought race but in the end G-Shock prevailed by 30 seconds. Peter Gilmore and his Nippon America's Cup team sailed very well."
