More on How PINTA Won Back-to-Back Races on TuesdayHONOLULU, HI AUGUST 5, 1998 After a broken rudder kept illbruck-PINTA from racing on Monday, we were last in the one design 48 fleet going into Tuesdays racing. In race one Pinta helmsman, Paul Cayard, nailed the start at the leward end of the line and never trailed. The wind was 24 knots at the start with four foot waves, beautiful sailing really. G-Shock skippered by Peter Gilmore, fleet leader after Monday's racing, finished second and pushed Pinta all the way finishing just six lengths behind. These two boats seemed to have a bit of speed on the fleet in the heavy air.
In race two, illbruck-PINTA again fought for the leeward end of the starting line, winning it over America True. However, unlike race one, the right side of the course eventually paid on the first leg and illbruck-PINTA arrived at the windward mark last. After a good run illbruck-PINTA was in fourth and then third at the end of the second run. G-Shock and Starlight were fighting it out for first and second about four lengths ahead of illbruck-PINTA around the last leward mark. Half way up the last windward leg, G-Shock and Starlight went toward the right side of the course and left illbruck-PINTAand America True to the left. The wind went our way and Pinta won the race by just one boatlength over G-Shock.
All in all, a good comeback day for illbruck-PINTA. There is a lot of racing left and with todays Molikai race having a factor of 3X points -- beating G-Shock is a must for illbruck-PINTA's quest to win this regatta.
