AmericaOne's Kostecki and Cayard Win 2nd Place Overall at 1998 Kenwood Cup
HONOLULU, HI AUGUST 11, 1998 Aboard the One Design 48 (1D48) illbruck-PINTA, AmericaOne Tactician, John Kostecki, and Skipper, Paul Cayard, sailed as team mates for the 1998 Kenwood Cup contested off of Honolulu, Hawa|. The two shared tactician and helmsman duties winning the final day of racing for the 1D48 Class Sunday, August 9, with a first and a second place in the eight-race class series. The class winner was the 1D48 G-SHOCK Nippon Challenge.
John Kostecki is also the skipper and tactician of illbruck-PINTA, which is campaigned by the illbruck Round the World Challenge team preparing for the Volvo Ocean Challenge 2001-2 following the 2000 America's Cup. The team owner is the illbruck Group, based in Leverkusen, Germany. Cayard was the guest helmsman for Kostecki this week and will also steer illbruck-PINTA during the St. Francis Yacht Club's Big Boat Series next month on San Francisco Bay.
As was typical for the week of sailing, weather conditions shifted constantly and made for strong competitive sailing in the 1D48 class. "A great week," said Kostecki, in summary. "I can't help thinking about what the result might have been if the rudder hadn't broken on the first day, but that's yacht racing." Kostecki complimented Gilmour, a newcomer to the class, for his overall victory. "These were tricky conditions and the racing was tight," he said. "It was nice to get out and beat the Japanese boat twice in a row, even if we couldn't overtake them for the overall first place."
Having only completed six of the eight races of the series, Kostecki and Cayard, still managed to finish second overall with scores of 1,1,1,2,2,5. " John and I had a great week of working together in preparation for the 2000 America's Cup," commented Paul Cayard. "I think we really triumphed as a team despite the technical difficulties we experienced at the start of the regatta - and we placed second without having sailed 25% of the race."

*Race 7 Abandoned. Scoring includes on-course penalty points for race 1: G-Shock accepted a 20% penalty for violating rule 29.1 and Starlight accepted a 50% penalty for violating rule 29.1. PINTA withdrew from races 1 and 2 due to a broken rudder and America True withdrew from Race 2 also apparently due to equipment failure.
