AUCKLAND, NZ - February 2, 1999 - Stay tuned to the AmericaOne website as we post reports from the team as they begin an intensive two-month training program in New Zealand.
Daily Report, February 2, 1999
Well, all the boys seemed to be rested and feeling good this morning after our day off. The forecast called for the breeze to be about 20kts in the morning and slowly die through the day. When we arrived on the race course on the Hauraki Gulf we found only twelve knots. We were worried it would die off, but luckily she held steady and provided nice breeze for our crew drills.
Our training partner of late, the America True was off racing Prada, the well dressed Italian team. The dreaded Kiwi Black boats were also on the Gulf. They were out testing Symmetrical vs. Asymettrical Spinnakers in the crossover range of 11-14 kts. Team NZ was even thorough enough to test a Symmetric spinnaker set sideways.
On our boat we rotated a few crew into new positions. The conditions here will be demanding enough to require more than one full crew, you will need a strong bench to win this cup. In our maneuvers we concentrated on tack sets and the "Mexican" rounding, two common roundings in Match racing. We feel that time away from racing to concentrate on specific maneuvers will prove very beneficial when we line up again next week.
Also, all the boys appreciate the good food given to us this evening by "The Duo Restaurant," Great wraps and coffee. Gotta run, back to the gym in the morning.
