Daily Report, February 20, 1999
Well, today was another great day on the Hauraki Gulf for AmericaOne. We welcomed the New Zealand media to our compound and hosted a day on the water with our team. We were fortunate enough to have New Zealand's "Voice of Sailing" Peter Montgomery/Sports Radio NZ join us for our first media sail. Our guests included Martin Tasker, Andrew Hawthorne, Phil Armstrong and George Jones/TVNZ, Gavin Wood/TV3, Vince Casalaina (AmericaOne videographer) and Daniel Forster (sailing photographer from Newport, RI). We went out on the our tender, the NZ Challenge, to rendezvous with the AmericaOne for a day of training with the Swiss team, FAST 2000.
On the water it was a nice beach day, 80 degrees, sunny, about eight knots of breeze, and flat water. We went through the paces with a few practice starts with the Swiss. That gave us a chance to work on some light air circling. Light airs have been hard to come by in the last few weeks and handling the boat delicately is a bit like balancing spinning plates.
The flat water was great as well because we were able to keep all of our guests well fed without them turning green. Throughout the day we rotated guests aboard AmericaOne to allow them an up-close and personal look at racing on an America's Cup boat.
We were able to get in three races and three practice starts so it was a productive day as far as maneuvers are concerned. The Swiss were very friendly competitors, led by Olympic legend Jochen Schumann. We will resume training with them tomorrow.
We enjoyed the chance to get to know the local media today and look forward to hosting our sponsors as well as a group of US journalists tomorrow.
