Daily Report, February 18, 1999
We had a slow start this morning due to a repair from last night. When we got out there we had 18 knots from the northeast and sunshine. We had one race with America True very close all the way around. The Swiss are back in town and we will be racing against them this Sunday. The Swiss team is skippered by Jochen Schumann, a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
Tonight, Hewlett-Packard Auckland is having a bar-b-q for us at our compound. Like all of our sponsors, HP has been very helpful here in Auckland and we are starting to build a friendly relationship with our partners.
From my standpoint, this time down here has been incredibly valuable. All the areas of the campaign are getting a thorough rehearsal and we are revising our lists and plans based on the new knowledge. We have a very good atmosphere amongst the whole team. We respect each others skills and we have a lot of confidence in our abilities. We are all anxious to begin sailing our new boat, USA-49, this summer and see what she can do. We have a lot to look forward to in a great year.
We are off to a good start!
