AmericaOne New Zealand Chronicles:
Hoops and Dreams

Daily Report - Saturday, November 27, 1999 -

Auckland, NZ

I lined up. Hands high, elbows forward, shoulders square. I flicked the ball, hoping it would go high. Unfortunately, my thoughts were elsewhere - Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, the kitchen team headed by the very capable, Mark Reihana, was handed the invitation:

"Thanksgiving Dinner to be celebrated at the base Saturday, November 27, 1999. Details to follow."

It didn't take long for us to realize "WE" were the details and "WE" had to follow-up.

The ball was in-flight and looking rather dodgy. Concentration is always important with such pursuits, unfortunately my mind was wavering.

Saturday morning, November 27, 1999, the kitchen team arrived at the base at 6:00 AM. We were prepared for the list of tasks for the day, to make Thanksgiving dinner for 130 team and family members. The list included:

6 5 kilo turkeys
25 pies
10 kilos green beans
10 kilos green peas
10 kilos carrots
20 kilos potatoes
5 kilos onions
6 heads of celery
8 roast pumpkins garlic, herbs, onions

A group of team members and their families have volunteered to cook pies, stuffing, decorate and set the tables.

As we worked our way down our list of tasks, and the families arrived with pies and trimmings in hand, I thought back to my last shot at the hoop. I sure hope our Thanksgiving dinner is better than my hoop game.
