AmericaOne Nautica 2000 Star Class World Championship:
Square Between The Eyes
Daily Report - May 18, 2000-
Annapolis, MD
If we dodged the bullet yesterday, we caught it square between the eyes today. In 10-15 knots we couldn't seem to do anything right and ended up in 52nd place after being 77th at the first mark. We started at the wrong end of the line, went the wrong way up the beat, got stuck in the middle of the fleet downwind, lost more upwind the second time. By that stage we were so deep that there wasn't an opportunity for any real gains. We couldn't get to an edge, couldn't get into clear air.Counting a discard we are in third place overall. Mark Reynolds has seven points, Ross MacDonald has 10 points and we have 16 points. The fourth place boat is an American with 28 points and then the pack starts with most of the other pretenders within 10 points of that. With two races to go the regatta is wide open, although Reynolds and MacDonald are sailing very well. In terms of qualifying we are still in good shape as the second qualifying country has 31 points.
Regards,
Jamie and Gavin
