AmericaOne Nautica 2000 Star Class World Championship:
We Dodged the First Bullet Yesterday
Daily Report - May 17, 2000-
We dodged the first bullet yesterday. In 10-15 knots the race was delayed for nearly two hours before getting underway. We got a reasonable start but weren't positive that we were not OCS (over early) and consequently missed the first opportunity to get right and ended up on the wrong side of a 25 degree shift. The good news was that all of the top boats were with us in the left. We rounded the top mark in what felt like 50th place, but most of the main opposition (Reynolds, Ross MacDonald) were behind us. We did a nice job downwind where we seemed to have a small speed edge and passed the group immediately in front of us to round the bottom mark in about 20th place. It seemed like there were a lot of lightweights ahead of us, and it was a race to see who could pass the most boats. It ended up being a ding dong battle with the usual characters (Ross MacDonald and Ian Walker from GBR)to the finish as the breeze died and got shifty. We crossed the finish in 10th place.
The good news is that Reynolds never escaped the group behind and finished 22nd, leaving us in 1st overall at the halfway point of the regatta. MacDoanald is in 2nd eight points back and Reynolds is two behind him. In qualifying terms, NZL, IRE, NED and BER still look strong but it is pretty close for the last few spots.
We were talking on the tow in yesterday about what a shame it is that its an Olympic year and that qualifying is the goal here, not winning the regatta. Without Sydney hanging over our heads we'd have the opportunity to hang it out for a race or two to see what would happened. But then we realized that we've gotten to this position by doing exactly the opposite, being conservative, not pushing the black flag (over early, disqualifications) and the smart thing to do would be to carry on in the same vein
