AmericaOne Nautica 2000 Star Class World Championship:
AmericaOne's Gavin Brady is Competing
in Hopes of Qualifying for the Olympics

Daily Report - May 15, 2000-

Annapolis, MD
AmericaOne's Gavin Brady is competing in the Star World's in Annapolis, MD in hopes of qualifying for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Gavin and sailing partner, Jamie Gale, are representing their home country, New Zealand.

The Following is an Update from Gavin and Jamie:

The 2000 Star World's finally started off Annapolis on Sunday (May 14) in shifty winds and an unpredictable breeze. After abandoning the first race close to the top mark, on account of a large windshift, we finally got another start around 2 PM in about 5 knots. The wind built and died regularly to as much as 15 knots at times. With 112 boats from 29 countries the Race Committee used a midline boat on the startline. Unfortunately, there ended up being a strong favour to the pin end so 80 or so yachts (ourselves included) decided to start at that end and not make use of the half mile of clear startline. A dozen or so boats got away, but we were not one of them. We were in the mid 30's at the top mark but gained steadily throughout the race to be in about 15th place as we went into the final beat. There were two major shifts and with a little luck and good management we nailed them both and passed 10 boats to finish in fifth place. We are pretty damned happy with that.

The forecast for the week says that yesterday was the best breeze of the week which is disappointing as yesterday was one of the shiftiest days either of us has ever experienced. It worked out for us as there was no way we would have had enough boatspeed to pass that many boats, but in the lighter air this fleet gets deep very quickly.

In terms of qualifying, we were first qualifying country. The usual suspects were lurking, IRE, DEN, NED, BER were all in the top group. With the conditions we are expecting it is good to get a good score on the board early.

Jamie and Gavin
