AmericaOne New Zealand Chronicles:
One Down, One To Go

Daily Report - February 4, 2000-

Auckland, NZ

Before today's race we decided to put the past behind and look at the coming races with Prada as a best of three series. Simple, win two races and we are in the America's Cup. Out on the Hauraki Gulf the South West winds kicked to 15 knots as the five-minute gun sounded. We entered the start from starboard and aimed our big gray and green beast at Prada. The Italians turned up and Paul hunted at them. We held them head to wind for over a minute while both boats sails flapped violently. As the Italians small rudder began to stall we tacked off to port and built speed. "Jibing" called Paul and around we came to line up our target one more time. This time Prada had no option but to run. From there we chased them towards the port (unfavored) end of the starting line. With seconds to go, AmericaOne tacked back to port. The gun fired and both boats sailed away from each other towards opposite sides of the course. It was a battle of the minds -- Prada's tactician Torben Grael and our own John Kostecki. Who would come out ahead? A nice shift right in the wind combined with maybe a slight edge in speed and AmericaOne took a one minute and thirty second lead at the first mark. From there it was smooth sailing as we protected our lead with conservative tactics and handling. So now it is "one down and one to go". A win tomorrow or Sunday will match us up against our Kiwi Friends from down the road. The team is working hard tonight making sure the boat, sails and mast are ready for tomorrow. Stay tuned for another wicked race as the Italians will be fighting for their lives and we will be trying to put the final nail in their coffin!

Until tomorrow.
