AmericaOne New Zealand Chronicles:
Three Wins!

Daily Report - February 2, 2000-

Auckland, NZ

Three Wins

After being down 3 - 1 to Prada, we have evened the score with three wins a piece. It was another windy day on the racecourse with gusts up to 25 knots.  We had the port end at the start, which in most cases is not the desired end.  Paul took control of the situation, and turned it around, dominating for the last three minutes of the starting sequence.  Coming off of the line, we wanted the left side of the course and that is what we got. After five minutes of sailing upwind on opposite tacks it became very apparent to us that we were not in the lead. Prada tacked to come towards us so we had to make a hard decision to tack below ITA 45 to keep the left. We believed that in the long run this would work in our favor and it did. A windshift from the left kicked in three minutes before the top mark and we tacked back towards Prada. With the new wind direction we came within three boatlengths of Luna Rossa. We attacked on the run and waited to see what Prada would do under pressure. At the first bottom mark they made a mistake when they dropped the spinnaker and wrapped the sail under the bow of ITA 45 allowing us to roll over them and take control of the race. It was a close match after that but we remained in control and our gybes were crisp and fast crossing the finish ahead of the competition.

Stay tuned.
