AmericaOne New Zealand Chronicles:
Right Place, Right Time

Daily Report - January 26, 2000-

Auckland, NZ

The long awaited first match of the LV Cup finally arrived today. Yesterday, with the weather postponement meant that we were extra eager to start the series. The day following a storm usually has its problems, the weather that remains is 'lumpy' and really a challenge to sail in with all of the bad air and serious water chop. Today was no exception, there were lots of shifts and the first beat was loaded with all kinds of surprises.

Following a foul that was given to the Italians after they hit our stern in the pre-start, we won the start and got the side of the line we wanted. The real turning point was on the second beat when Prada split and sailed off to race their own race which paid off for them in the long run. We showed good downwind speed but just didn't catch enough of the right shifts to push ourselves ahead. By the third mark, there was enough of a lead for Prada to make their penalty turn and you could feel the competitive charge on the boat -- it was a close race again. We sailed a great tactical last run and closed up the gap but didn't get to take the win. Both teams sailed a really good race but perhaps today we were a little less lucky.

Much more racing to go.
