AmericaOne New Zealand Chronicles:
After the Fog Cleared
About The Challenge
Daily Report - January 20, 2000-
My day started out with a trip to the gas dock to fuel up the powerboats. It was so foggy that on the way back to the base the only image that I could make out in the blanket of fog was the Sky Tower peeking out above the fog line. After the fog cleared, it turned out to be another light air day on the Gulf. Hot, sunny, and very light breezes were in the forecast, another day for sunscreen.
The teams aboard USA 61 and USA 49 headed out for the Hauraki Gulf around 10:30 AM. Once the sailboats started the testing the fun began. This is one of the perks of being a tender operator. When the sailboats two-boat test our job is to follow them in case there is a problem or if sails or people need to be transported. During testing our day gets a little slow, as a tender driver I use this time to catch up on reading.
When the boats are done testing I hook up a tow with USA 49 and bring them to Northhead Point. Today I transferred some sails to the boat so that they could be hoisted and examined. After that, we headed for the “barn”. On the way in I couldn’t help but notice all the beautiful mega-yachts. More and more come in everyday, and they seem to be getting larger all the time. The most impressive one yet it a huge green yacht with a helicopter and three powerboats on the back.
